History
What is Tea ceremony?
The Japanese tea ceremony (茶道, Sadō) is a ritualized practice of preparing and drinking powdered green tea (matcha, 抹茶), deeply influenced by Zen Buddhism. The tea ceremony was formalized in the 16th century by Sen no Rikyū (千利休), who emphasized the principles of harmony (和, wa), respect (敬, kei), purity (清, sei), and tranquility (寂, jaku).
The ceremony involves a highly structured series of movements, from the precise whisking of matcha to the respectful exchange of tea bowls. The traditional setting often includes a chashitsu (茶室), a dedicated tea room designed with minimalist aesthetics, where seasonal elements and the philosophy of wabi-sabi (侘寂)—finding beauty in imperfection—are reflected.
There are different schools of tea ceremony, including Urasenke, Omotesenke, and Mushakouji-senke, each with distinct stylistic approaches.
