The History of Japanese Chopsticks
Japanese chopsticks have a history of over 1,400 years. Introduced from China in the 6th century, they were first used in Shinto rituals and at the imperial court before becoming part of daily life as Japanese cuisine developed.
Over time, Japanese chopsticks evolved to be shorter and pointed, suited for rice, fish, and delicate seasonal food. By the Edo period, they became everyday objects of craftsmanship, made from wood or bamboo and guided by etiquette that teaches respect.
At Chopstick Making Osaka, making your own chopsticks connects you to this tradition—bringing together history, craftsmanship, and harmony in a simple daily tool.
