A report from our on-site tea class for a school group
On 14 June 2026, we visited a school program from India and gave a tea class to about 40 students of elementary and junior high school age. We set up in a meeting room, with a projector screen and a tea table with a red cloth at the front.
Three things that surprise people
We started with a few facts that usually surprise first-timers: tea first came to Japan as a medicine, matcha is the whole leaf ground into powder (not leaves you take out), and you hold the bowl with both hands.
Watch me make a bowl of matcha
Next, our teacher made a bowl of matcha in front of everyone, step by step: warm and clean the bowl, scoop the matcha, pour the hot water, then whisk in a "W" shape until it turns foamy.
Quiz time
We finished with a tea quiz, and hands shot up all over the room every time we asked a question. It was a lively class, and a lovely chance to share Japanese tea culture with young people from overseas.
