A Tea Ceremony Class for American University Students

A report from an on-site tea class for a university study program

On 1 July 2026, we visited a university in Kyoto that was hosting a short-term study program for students from the United States, and gave a tea ceremony class to about 40 students.

A little history first

We began with a short introduction to the history of tea in Japan and the ideas behind the tea ceremony, so that the students knew what to look for in the demonstration.

Matcha quiz

Then came the quiz. One question was "How much caffeine is in a bowl of matcha, compared to a cup of coffee?" Plenty of guesses, and a few surprised faces when the answer appeared on the screen.

Demonstration, then whisk your own

At the red tea table, our teacher showed how a bowl of matcha is prepared. After that, the students whisked their own matcha and enjoyed it with wagashi.
